This project sets out to develop a set of synthesis questions and sequences that cover the core content learning goals of PH422: Static Fields, adding 3 synthesis problems and 2 sequences to the course material. Synthesis questions and sequences are both ways of presenting upper division material in a way which is intended to stimulate higher-level reasoning and a greater sense of context for students learning physics.

This project articulates the problems, their solutions, and the main challenges we intend for students to experience as they solve these problems.  The discussion of these problems also explores the higher-level learning goals and connections these problems hope to achieve in students, a critical look at their position in the context of the course itself, the  Paradigms in Physics project, the physics curriculum at Oregon State University, and finally the pedagogical value these problems hold and the framing and teaching philosophy necessary to see these types of problems be most effective.
